2012 is bringing change to the world. And although it might be a minor change; the new Subaru Impreza is following that trend. Still calling on its Rally inspired background, the 2012 Impreza is fun to drive, quick, it grips the road for quick tight turns and stops just as quickly. The new Impreza is more refined. Subaru’s design team is calling on better products for the fit and finish of the cabin. Gone are the hard plastics of yesteryear, replaced instead with soft accents and big easy to use and see knobs. The stock stereo is upgraded from previous editions of this “fighter plane on wheels”. And an on board Sat-Nav now comes standard on many of the models.
However despite the changes to the platform, the 2012 Subaru Impreza is still the perfect car for Vermont and New England. Heck any place that gets weather or is good for controlled yet spirited driving.
Subaru claims they’ve lightened the load on the 2012 Imp, which is what makes up for the motor packing 20 less horsepower, which seems kind of odd to many a Subbie Fan. However you don’t notice it as a lack of power. No, its not the eye peeling acceleration of the WRX/STI. But its quick enough to get out of its own way.

There is a ton more cargo room it seems. With the Subaru engineers working 4th dimensional magic. Making sure there is plenty of space from the front to the way back of the 5 door(hatchback), for cargo, people or pets. Proof of this is the fact that I can get my golf clubs in the boot and a six foot five inch camera man in the passenger seat in total comfort.
So far, since I’ve received my vehicle. There has been a strange, mixed bag of weather, mostly atypical to our beloved Vermont for this time of year. But we’ve driven through mud, rain, snow and ice, combinations of all three..and in true Subaru fashion the Impreza has handled all the adverse road travel with aplomb.
Even with the new ‘low resistance’ tires that come equipped on my 17in alloys, this car has had no problem at all handling what Mother Nature has dished up so far.
This car is a big change in a lot of ways. With its fuel sipping 33 to 38mpg highway. Its more civilized but still aggressive ride. Its new sweeping lines, the features upgraded inside and out makes for a spectacular ride.
Now there is just a little over 2000 miles on this new ride.
But we’ve already obtained and held 38mpg high more than once. And will be getting either some video or photographic proof of these fantastic numbers.
There’s a ton more stats and details on the car we could share. Like its crash rating or the number of airbags Subbie has placed to insure your safety. Or why losing 20 hp of the block does not decrease performance . Bottom line Subaru has nailed this one out the gate with their redesign for the 2012 Impreza. Opening up a wider market share then backwards ball cap wearing racers. Its become a little more civilized but you can sure feel the rally inspired performance of previous generations.
So in quick to recap. If your looking for a fire spitting rally car..this is not your Subaru. Wait to see the 2012 WRX or WRX STI. But if your looking for some fun handling and performance while you get great miles per gallon..Give this ride a very hard look. Come in and see me, doug Smith at Twin City Subaru in Berlin Vermont and schedule a test drive. And get entered into lovevermontdrivesubaru.
Happy Motoring.
